The Digest: Twitter’s transparency, a crash course in make-up and England comes second in Euro 2012

Our quest to keep you informed on the latest social media tools and trends continues: just look at what we discovered this week…

SOCIAL MEDIA DOWNLOAD

  • This week, Google unveiled Google+ Events. On the official Google blog, Vic Gundotra said “Today’s online event tools are really just web forms that ask, “Are you going?” Worse yet, they bail when you need them the most: during the actual event, and after everyone leaves.” Google+ Events, however, aim to be with you before, during and after the event.  Invites can include personalised messages from YouTube, and their ‘Party Mode’ will enable the event’s photographs to be updated in real time during the event

  • Britpop legends Blur embraced social media to release two new singles this week – their first for nine years. The band live streamed ‘The Puritan’ and ‘Under the Westway’ on Twitter as well as posting lyric videos on YouTube and promoting all content via Facebook and Instagram
  • On Monday, Twitter launched their first transparency report, publicly sharing information such as how frequently governments around the world ask for Twitter users’ account details and how many copyright complaints it receives and grants to content-owning companies. The report reveals that Twitter complied with 63% of government requests in the last six months, but denied all requests for censorship

THE TOOLBOX

Navigating your way inside certain buildings can sometimes be just as tricky as the great outdoors. Luckily Google comes to our rescue with the launch of indoor Google Maps. Available in the US since last year, Google Maps now has the indoor floor plans to over 40 venues in the UK, including the British Museum and the O2 Arena, which can be accessed by simply zooming in on the building.

CAMPAIGN OF THE WEEK

We know not to drink and drive. We know not to text and drive.  But research shows that 500,000 collisions per year are caused in the UK alone by women applying make up whilst driving. Volkswagon teamed up with DDB Berlin to educate women about this dangerous reality in the place they associate most with make up tips and tricks – YouTube. Well known beauty vlogger Nikkie starts this tutorial like any other – but soon shocks her subscribers into hearing the message.

THE BIG PICTURE – INFOGRAPHIC

Spain ran away with the Euro 2012 trophy – but according to this infographic from The Score, England came a close second..in the Twitter stakes that is! Other top tweeters include Italy and Portugal, with nearly 12 millon tweets being generated during the tournament.
