The Lexis Digest: #OccupyTwitter, WSJ World Stream and Curing some Kidz

What’s hot in the world of social media this week? Welcome to the Lexis Digest! The Social Media And Digital Download:

  • One of the more interesting debates to have been ignited following those pictures of Prince Harry, has been the battle between print and digital media, and whether the former is falling behind the times. In an attempt to embrace the digital age, the Wall Street Journal launched WSJ World Stream on Monday, a hub for mobile video content filmed by WSJ’s global editorial team on their smartphones.  Clips will all be under one minute long (the optimum length for sharing) and will all undergo editorial review
  • Twitter has come under fire for removing the stamp that tells you which Twitter client those you follow have tweeted from. The likes of Echofon, Hootsuite and Tweetbot will no longer get the valuable third-party endorsement from their famous users that they previously enjoyed. This move has sparked a retaliation campaign called #OccupyTwitter – calling for Twitter to remain an open platform
  • Reddit (or the ‘front page of the internet’, as they like to be known) has already raised millions of dollars for charitable causes, but this week they have made it official with RedditDonate powered by start ups Dwolla and Stripe. As of this week, managers of the site’s topic pages (or Subreddits) can install the new “Donate” buttons on their pages and accept donations for certain non-profits
Tool of the Week: As Sean Parker (apparently) once said, “We lived on farms, we lived in cities, and now we live on the internet.” But if you ever miss a physical photo album, the new app from Snapfish SocialPics  will scan your Facebook timeline within a designated timeframe for your most popular photos and status updates and turn them into an album. Campaign of the Week: Charity singles have lost their shine in recent years, but New Zealand charity CureKidz managed to raise $1.3 million this week, by drafting in comedy duo Flight of the Conchords. The video of their song writing session with children at Clyde Quay School in Mount Victoria has had over half a million hits on YouTube and the single went to number one within 90 minutes. All proceeds from iTunes downloads went to medical research. The Big Picture: Infographic of the Week What a difference a decade makes. This infographic from bestedsites.com compares the world of the web in 2002 and 2012, examining speeds, search terms and social networks.
